Po'olenalena

Overview

One of our Wailea favorites, beautiful at sunrise or sunset, with soft sand, swaying palms and lava rocks for the setting.

Across the ocean you can see Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi and Molokini Crater.

Good to Know

Sunsets are usually much busier than mornings, and we often work between fellow photographers and beach wedding ceremonies.

Polo

Overview

A Wailea beach that’s one of the easiest for anyone with limited mobility, with a paved path from the public parking lot down to the shoreline. Lovely at sunrise or sunset.

It fronts the Fairmont Kea Lani and the Polo Beach Club, with beautiful scenery all around.

Lava rocks, palm trees and a sandy shore make the setting.

Good to Know

Because it’s in front of a resort, beachgoers and walkers pass by all day.

There are buildings nearby, so from some angles they’ll appear in the background.

Launiupoko

Overview

One of the best sunset spots in the Lahaina and Kāʻanapali area.

There are no buildings within walking distance, and the crowd is mostly surfers. (It’s a great spot for beginner to intermediate surfers.)

The scenery is wonderfully varied, with greenery, sandy shores and a loko iʻa (fishpond).

Good to Know

When the surf is good, parking gets tight. There’s overflow parking across the street, but the surf usually decides how busy the beach is.

Kanaha Beach Park

Overview

In Kahului, just behind Kahului Airport (OGG). It’s best in the morning, since strong winds pick up later in the day.

At sunrise the beach is quieter and the winds are much calmer. It’s also a perfect first stop for family photos before driving the Road to Hāna.

Good to Know

Sunsets aren’t ideal here, since the sun sets behind the mountains in the background. Afternoon winds also draw plenty of Maui’s windsurfers, which makes later sessions a little tricky.
